“For the First Time in My Life, I Feel in Control of My Weight” — Greg’s Story

By: Chris Gates

Like many people, Greg didn’t struggle with losing weight.

He struggled with keeping it off.

Over the years, he had successfully reached a healthy weight several times. The problem wasn’t whether he could lose weight. The problem was sustainability.

Every time life got busy, routines slipped, old habits returned, and the weight eventually came back.

When Greg joined my 1-on-1 online fitness coaching program, he wasn’t looking for another crash diet or extreme fitness plan.

He wanted something different.

“I’ve been able to achieve a healthy weight several times in my life, but I’ve never been able to sustain it for very long,” Greg explains. “My goal when I signed up for coaching was to find a sustainable approach for someone with a busy lifestyle who does not have time to go to the gym every day.”

Like many working parents, Greg had a lot competing for his attention. Work responsibilities, family obligations, travel, social events, vacations, holidays, and everything else that comes with adult life made consistency difficult.

What he needed wasn’t more motivation.

He needed a system.

Learning Skills Instead of Chasing Results

One of the first things Greg realized during coaching was that lasting weight loss had less to do with willpower and much more to do with awareness.

Although he had learned a lot about nutrition over the years, he had never consistently tracked his diet or fully understood how much his daily habits influenced his results.

“The coaching process has truly been life changing,” Greg says. “I’ve learned a lot about nutrition as an adult, but I had never taken the time to count calories and consider how important it is to be consistent with what I’m consuming.”

Through our weekly coaching conversations, Greg learned how to build meals around protein, manage hunger while dieting, navigate restaurant meals, and handle situations that had historically caused him to lose momentum.

Perhaps most importantly, he learned that progress didn’t require perfection.

Throughout the coaching process, Greg successfully navigated vacations, work travel, birthday celebrations, social events, restaurant meals, desserts, alcohol, and busy family schedules without abandoning his goals.

Instead of viewing those situations as setbacks, he learned how to fit them into a sustainable lifestyle.

Building Strength Without Living in the Gym

Another major breakthrough came through strength training.

Prior to coaching, Greg had very little experience with resistance training and wasn’t interested in spending hours every week driving to and from a gym.

What surprised him was how effective a simple, structured program could be.

“I really enjoyed the strength training program,” Greg said. “As someone who did not grow up with any experience in strength training, Chris’s approach provided the structure and support that I needed.”

Over time, Greg gained confidence with the exercises, learned proper technique, and discovered he could get excellent results training from home with nothing more than a set of dumbbells.

The benefits extended far beyond the workouts themselves.

As he lost weight and gained strength, everyday tasks became noticeably easier. Moving heavy equipment around his basement, carrying objects, and handling projects around the house no longer felt like major physical challenges.

Those real-world improvements became some of the most rewarding victories of the entire process.

More Than Weight Loss

While Greg is proud of the physical transformation, the biggest change may have been his mindset.

Rather than constantly feeling like he was one bad weekend away from losing progress, he developed confidence in his ability to handle life’s inevitable ups and downs.

Today, he understands that a vacation won’t ruin months of hard work.

A birthday dinner won’t derail his goals.

A stressful week doesn’t have to become a stressful month.

“I enjoy having a structured approach to my diet and exercise, as well as the knowledge that the hard work cannot be undone in a few days,” Greg says.

That realization is incredibly powerful.

For many people, the fear of failure creates an all-or-nothing relationship with health and fitness. Greg learned that consistency isn’t about being perfect. It’s about returning to the habits that work.

Again and again.

Greg's Before/After Transformation

The Real Return on Investment

When asked what stands out most about the experience, Greg doesn’t just talk about pounds lost.

He talks about knowledge.

“I feel like I didn’t just lose weight. I lost weight while I was earning a degree in health and fitness.”

That knowledge is what gives him confidence moving forward.

He now understands how to structure his nutrition, how to strength train effectively, how to manage social situations, and how to stay on track when life gets busy.

Most importantly, he has a plan.

“Moving forward, I plan to have the same weekly check-ins with myself that I was doing with Chris,” he says. “I think that is important because it forces me to take time to reflect on my overall health in a structured way.”

And after years of struggling to maintain his results, Greg can now say something he never could before:

“Thanks to Chris’s training program, I have never felt more in control of my weight than I do right now.”

What Greg’s Story Can Teach You

If you’re waiting for the perfect time to start working on your health, Greg’s story is proof that perfection isn’t required.

You don’t need to spend hours in the gym.

You don’t need to give up vacations, restaurant meals, birthdays, or desserts.

You don’t need to be perfect.

You need a plan, a willingness to learn, and a system you can follow even when life gets busy.

Because sustainable results aren’t built during perfect weeks.

They’re built by learning how to stay consistent during imperfect ones.
