The Intro Block of Training

The best way to get into a program or start a fitness routine is to first introduce your body to the new stimulus.

I feel an intro block of training is important because you can get your body into the routine you want for the long-term program while at the same time providing a stimulus for your musculature and central nervous system that isn’t overly taxing. If you jump right into Week 1 without any type of intro, you’re probably going to find yourself so battered and bruised that you can’t continue for Week 2. The intro block prevents that.

An intro block normally lasts anywhere from 1-4 weeks, and the basic strategy that I prefer is to mimmick the routine of your program each day, just with lower overall intensity and volume. This should get you into a groove and let you focus on form and technique in order to enter the formal program on the right foot.

I spent the past week doing just that, and I’m pumped to jump into Week 1 of Month 1 of my new 6-month strength program! For deadlifts, I worked up to a pretty simple set of 4 at 265 lbs (seen above). My top set for deadlifts this week will be at 275 for an AMRAP, so I feel prepared to hit that without any issues!
